August: The Heart of Summer

Aug 4
4 min read

August sits at the heart of summer. It is the season at its fullest. August is nature’s show and tell.

Everything that has quietly grown through spring and early summer now reveals itself to the fullest. Flowers are at their brightest, vegetables are ready for harvesting, hedgerows are filled with berries, and orchards begin to offer their fruit. Even the bees and butterflies seem eager to join the celebration, moving from bloom to bloom as if sharing in summer’s final performance.

There is a quiet confidence about August. Nature doesn’t rush or compete; it simply becomes what it has been growing towards all year. It reminds us that growth isn’t always obvious while it’s happening, but in time it reveals itself.

As the month unfolds, another rhythm begins to emerge. Morning become a little fresher, harvest begins, and we find ourselves picking up tools once more - returning to familiar routines, putting things back in order and preparing for the month ahead. The season gently shifts from showing to gathering, from celebrating to preparing, while never losing the childlike beauty of the present moment.

This month, we’re taking inspiration from four simple yoga poses that reflect journey through August.

Lion Pose - Confidence and Expression

Lion Pose: Relieves facial tension, strengthens the throats and vocal cords, and reduces stress.
Lion Pose: Relieves facial tension, strengthens the throats and vocal cords, and reduces stress.

Lion Pose (Simhasana) captures the spirit of nature's show and tell. It is playful, expressive and impossible to do half-heartedly. With a wide-open mouth, stretched tongue and a full exhale, it encourages us to release tension held in the face, jaw and neck.

How often do we realise we're clenching our jaw without even noticing?

Whether it's work, driving, staring at a screen or simply concentrating, tension has a habit of creeping in. Lion Pose reminds us to breathe deeply, let go and express ourselves freely—just as the natural world does at the height of summer.

Give it a try:

Sit comfortably with your spine tall. Take a deep breath in, then breathe out through your mouth, opening it wide, stretching out your tongue and letting out a gentle "ha" sound. Repeat 2–3 times to help release tension in the face and jaw.

Dolphin Pose – Quiet Strength

Dolphin Pose: builds upper body strength, stretches the lower body, and boosts mental focus.
Dolphin Pose: builds upper body strength, stretches the lower body, and boosts mental focus.

Although it looks gentle, Dolphin Pose quietly develops strength through the shoulders, upper back and core. It isn't about pushing harder; it's about creating stability.

Summer may appear effortless, yet beneath its beauty lies months of patient growth. Dolphin Pose reminds us that real strength is often built quietly, one steady breath at a time.

Give it a try:

Begin on your hands and knees, then lower onto your forearms. Lift your hips towards the ceiling, keeping a soft bend in the knees if that feels more comfortable. Hold for a few slow breaths before gently lowering.

Plank Pose – Finding Your Centre

Plank pose: build core strength, improve posture, and protect your back
Plank pose: build core strength, improve posture, and protect your back

Plank develops core strength, improves posture and reminds us that almost every movement begins with a strong foundation.

Whether you're cycling for Cycle to Work Day on 6th August, tending the garden or enjoying the outdoors, your core supports you every step of the way.

As August begins to turn towards autumn, we naturally start gathering everything together. Holidays draw to a close, routines return and our attention shifts towards what comes next. Plank reminds us to come back to our centre—to create a strong foundation before the rhythm of autumn begins.

Give it a try:

Begin on your hands and knees. Place your hands directly beneath your shoulders, then step one foot back followed by the other until your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Gently engage your tummy muscles, keep your neck relaxed and breathe steadily. Hold for a few slow breaths, then lower your knees back to the floor.

Mountain Pose – Standing Grounded

Mountain Pose: improve posture, builds core and leg strength, and enhances balance.
Mountain Pose: improve posture, builds core and leg strength, and enhances balance.

Mountain Pose (Tadasana) may look like simply standing still, yet it teaches balance, alignment and awareness from the feet upwards.

Like the landscape around us, it is calm, steady and quietly confident. As one season prepares to hand over to the next, Mountain Pose reminds us that change doesn't need to be hurried. We can stand firmly where we are while welcoming whatever comes next.

Give it a try:

Stand with your feet comfortably apart. Relax your shoulders, let your arms rest by your sides and imagine the crown of your head reaching gently towards the sky. Take a few slow, easy breaths.
